Our focus

The ICRISAT-HOPE project’s activities are built around five focus areas:

We improve crops

A major objective of the project is to improve varieties and field management strategies for our key crops, sorghum and millets. We work towards producing varieties with higher yield, which are more resistant to diseases, pests and drought, achieving a higher grain and nutritional quality. (Details)

We enable adoption

Project field staff (from ICRISAT and partner organizations) work continuously to ensure our improved crops and management systems are adopted quickly by the farmers. We ensure that quality seeds, recommended fertilizers, and improved cultivation and crop management techniques are available to our target communities. (Details)

We develop markets

We recognize that few farmers will cultivate a crop which they can’t sell. As the project uses a value-chain approach, we recognize that it is vital to identify and develop markets for our key crops. We also assist the farmers in optimizing the link between key entities in the value-chain: transporters, processors, agro-enterprises,…. (Details)

We build capacity

To achieve a self-sustained impact from our activities, the project strengthens the human and institutional capacity of the institutions and partners we work with. We invest heavily in training scientists and field workers, as well as assisting institutions build their research infrastructure. (Details)

…so that we can impact lives

The project’s ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for the rural poor in the drylands of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. It seeks to reach and impact the lives of at least 200,000 households in its first four years.
Within ten years the project will benefit 2.1 million households. (Details)
